MOGADISHU, Somalia – The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) is making waves on the international stage by participating in the Global Conference on Universal Access to Information in Accra, Ghana. Hosted by UNESCO and the Ghanaian government, this influential event kicked off on Tuesday, running for two days under the theme “Mainstreaming Access to Information and Participation in the Public Sector.”

Bringing together journalists, policymakers, and global experts, the conference stands as a crucial platform for examining how access to information can strengthen transparency and accountability in governance, while honoring the International Day for Universal Access to Information.

NUSOJ Secretary-General Omar Faruk Osman is a key speaker at the conference, underscoring the union’s unwavering commitment to the freedom of information in Somalia. Osman is expected to illuminate the challenges and strides being made in media freedom and access to information within the country.

“The right to access information is essential for democracy and good governance,” Osman stated ahead of the event. “In Somalia, we are working tirelessly to align our national laws with international standards, ensuring that citizens can access the information they need to engage fully in public life.” His words echo the union’s mission to implement Article 32 of Somalia’s Provisional Constitution, which enshrines the right to freedom of expression and information.

The conference features a dynamic series of panel discussions that delve into various facets of information access, exploring its implications for social justice, governance, and active citizen participation. Experts from around the world will share best practices, crafting actionable strategies that can resonate globally.

NUSOJ’s engagement in this high-profile dialogue aligns seamlessly with its mission to empower journalists and foster a more transparent and accountable government in Somalia. As the nation navigates complex socio-political landscapes, enhancing access to information stands as a crucial pillar in the ongoing fight for human rights and democracy.

As the conference unfolds, the focus will be on dynamic engagement, valuable insights, and crafting frameworks that champion universal access to information. The outcomes promise to shape policies benefiting both Somali citizens and the global community dedicated to freedom of information and expression.
