GAROWE, Puntland, Somalia — The Puntland Election Commission announced the preliminary results of the local council elections in the Nugal region on Wednesday, revealing a close race between major political parties.

In the capital city of Garowe, President Deni’s Kaah party secured 12 seats, while the Horseed party followed with six seats. The Sincad party won five seats, and several smaller parties, including Mideeye, Shaqaalaha, Runcad, Mustaqbal, and Ifiye, each claimed two seats. Notably, 9 out of the 33 council seats were won by women.

The Kaah party, holding the majority with 12 seats, needs five more to secure the mayoralty of Garowe. The competition remains tight in the towns of Godob Jiraan and Dangorayo, where the Kaah, Horseed, and Sincad parties received nearly equal votes. It is expected that the Kaah party will form alliances with these parties to strengthen its position.

The local council elections in the Nugal region are critical in shaping the political landscape of Puntland, and the final results are eagerly awaited.
