GALKAYO, Somalia – Puntland state in Somalia executed ten members of the Al-Shabaab militant group early on Saturday in Galkayo city, the capital of the central Mudug region.
The public execution was carried out following a decision by the region’s military court, which found these individuals guilty of orchestrating and participating in lethal attacks within the city.
The execution by firing squad was reported by local police, marking a stern response from Puntland’s authorities to the persistent threat posed by Al-Shabaab, known for its deadly insurgency across Somalia.
This comes in the wake of heightened security measures and follows a recent incident where several Al-Shabaab militants managed to escape from a local prison, although some were later recaptured.
The move has sparked discussions on the use of capital punishment in combating Al-Shabaab, with some local sentiments on X (formerly Twitter) expressing relief over the swift justice, while others debate the implications of such severe penalties, especially given the age of some of the militants involved in previous incidents.
However, it underscores Puntland’s commitment to eradicating Al-Shabaab’s influence through decisive legal actions.
