LAASCAANOD, Somalia  – The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has initiated a relief operation in Laascaanod, the capital of the Sool region, to combat the devastating effects of drought, delivering food and other forms of humanitarian aid to those in need.

The aid, which was received by the SSC-Khatumo administration, is intended to assist approximately 20,000 families in and around the city. This move marks a significant effort to address the immediate needs of the communities suffering from the drought’s harsh impact.

Mohamud Moalim, the head of SoDMA, called on Somalis nationwide to rally in support of the drought-affected areas. “This is a time for unity, for our people to come together and extend help to our brothers and sisters in need,” Moalim said in a statement.

He also expressed his gratitude towards the Chinese government, acknowledging their generous contributions to Somalia’s drought relief operations. “We are very thankful for the support from China, which has been instrumental in our fight against this humanitarian crisis,” he added.

The drought, one of the worst in recent years, has led to acute shortages of water, food, and pasture, exacerbating the already fragile situation in the region known for its pastoralist communities. With this aid delivery, SoDMA aims not only to provide immediate relief but also to lay the groundwork for longer-term recovery strategies in the affected regions.
