KUWAIT – The head of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Maxamuud Macallin Cabdulle, met with Dr. Ahmed Amdihun, the Coordinator of the Disaster Risk Management Program at the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), in Kuwait.

The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between SoDMA and the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), with the aim of expanding regional collaboration on disaster risk management.

Both officials agreed that IGAD should facilitate the exchange of disaster-related data across the borders of regional countries, enhancing coordinated responses to cross-boundary disasters.

Additionally, they agreed to organize a special conference between disaster management agencies from Somalia and Ethiopia, which IGAD will facilitate. The conference, expected to take place in 2025, will focus on enhancing cooperation between the two countries in mitigating disaster risks and improving early warning systems for hazardous climate events.

This new collaboration comes as the Horn of Africa faces significant challenges from frequent floods, droughts, and earthquakes. The exchange of early warnings and better coordination are seen as critical to reducing the human and economic toll of such disasters.

The partnership aims to strengthen regional preparedness and response systems, and IGAD is committed to facilitating further cooperation among countries in the region to address the growing disaster risks.
