MOGADISHU, Somalia — The Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency reported Tuesday that coordinated airstrikes with the Somali National Army killed 48 Al-Shabaab militants, including leaders and fighters, in the Middle Shabelle and Hiran regions.
According to NISA, the strikes targeted multiple locations across the two regions. The first airstrike hit the Daarunicma area, killing 17 Al-Shabaab members. A second strike in the Alkowsar area left 19 militants dead, while a third strike in the Beera Yabaal area of Hiran killed 12 more.
The airstrikes come amid clashes reported earlier Tuesday between government forces and Al-Shabaab fighters in the Daarunicma and Beera Yabaal areas, though NISA did not specify the timing of the strikes in its statement.
Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaida-affiliated group, has waged a long-running insurgency against Somalia’s government. The Somali military, often supported by international partners, has intensified operations against the group in recent years.
