MOGADISHU, Somalia – In a significant blow to the al-Shabab militant group, Somali army forces, supported by international partners, carried out an airstrike that resulted in the death of at least 50 militants.
The operation took place near the Harardhere district in the Mudug region on Monday, targeting a gathering of militants in the Barag Garguurte area.
According to state-owned media, the airstrike was conducted in the Barag Garguurte area, located approximately 20 kilometers from the Harardhere district in the southern part of the Mudug region. Among the militants killed in the attack was a senior leader known as Ahmed Jiis.
The Somali News Agency reported that the al-Shabab militants had gathered in the area to launch an attack on local people near the Harardhere district. However, their plans were thwarted by the timely intervention of the Somali army forces and their international partners.
This operation comes at a time when most of the areas in the southern part of the Mudug region are under the control of the al-Shabab group.
The successful airstrike represents a significant victory for the Somali government and its international partners in their ongoing fight against the militant group.
