Somali cabinet discusses security, anti-Shabaab operations

Mogadishu, May 29, 2025 – Somalia’s cabinet on Thursday held its weekly meeting in Mogadishu, focusing on national security and ongoing military operations against the Al-Shabaab militant group, officials said.

 

The session, chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, reviewed reports on recent gains by the Somali National Army and local forces in their campaign to dismantle Al-Shabaab strongholds in central and southern regions.

Ministers also received briefings on aviation safety concerns within Somali airspace and discussed efforts to address operational challenges facing the sector, according to a government statement.

The cabinet further reviewed the implementation of public sector reforms, including the standardization of ranks and salaries for government employees.

In another decision, the ministers promoted Ahmed Jama Omar to the rank of ambassador, citing his experience and service in the diplomatic corps.
