MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Council of Ministers voted overwhelmingly to approve the Bill on the Rights of Somali Children, a move that improves the next generation’s life.
Somalia Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre has chaired the weekly cabinet session at his office within the heavily fortified Villa Somalia, the presidential Palace in Mogadishu.
This bill submitted by the Ministry of Women and Human Rights protects the rights of Somali children and removes everything that violates their rights, per the statement.
The law is awaiting approval by the two houses of the Federal Parliament.
In 2015 Somalia ratified the CRC, which spells out the basic human rights that children should have wherever they live, including their right to develop to the fullest, to education, and to be protected from exploitation.
UNICEF said the Child Rights Bill demonstrates the commitment of the government to ensure the articles under the CRC are upheld.
Also, the cabinet was briefed on the general security of the country and the readiness for the second phase of the operation against Al-Shabaab spearheaded by Hassan Sheikh.
The SNA military movement is going on in most of the regions of the country with the government plans to begin with Galmudug and HirShabelle, where Al-Shabaab is based.
