CAPE TOWN, South Africa – A high-level delegation from the Federal Government of Somalia, led by Second Deputy Prime Minister Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi, is attending the Africa Water Investment Summit underway in Cape Town from August 13 to 15.
The summit, jointly organized by the Government of South Africa, the Chairperson of the African Union, and the Global High-Level Panel on Water Investment for Africa, aims to accelerate financing for water and sanitation infrastructure across the continent in response to the growing challenges of climate change and to promote sustainable development.
The event brings together African leaders, ministers, development partners, and private sector actors to align efforts in scaling up water investment and achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (clean water and sanitation for all) as well as the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
In light of the worsening climate crisis and water scarcity, the Somali government sees water investment as a top strategic priority crucial for building community resilience, preparing for and mitigating climate impacts, driving economic growth, and enhancing national stability.
Deputy Prime Minister Jibril is expected to hold bilateral meetings with regional leaders and international partners to strengthen cooperation on water infrastructure and development initiatives across Africa.
