JOWHAR, Somalia – Somali National Army (SNA) forces and allied Macawiisley militias are conducting military operations against Al-Shabaab in the Middle Shabelle region, security sources said on Sunday.
The mobilization follows heavy clashes on Saturday between government forces, local fighters, and Al-Shabaab militants in several villages near the coastal town of Cadale. Military officials confirmed that both sides suffered significant casualties.
The operations include targeted airstrikes on Al-Shabaab positions, while armored military vehicles and additional troops have been deployed to strategic areas to drive the group from its remaining strongholds.
Somali Land Forces Commander General Sahal has urged troops and allied militias to intensify their offensive, describing the fight against Al-Shabaab as a just war.
Saturday’s battles took place in villages including Laba Garas, Bursha Shiiq, and Sumadaale, all located near Cadale district.
Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda-linked armed group, has waged an insurgency against Somalia’s central government for over a decade. Somali forces, supported by international partners, have been engaged in a large-scale campaign to push the militants out of rural strongholds.
