MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Federal Government said that the National Army with the help of foreign partners carried out a planned operation in the Hiran region on Saturday.

The offensive took place in Qoob Yahaas area within the Hirshabelle regional state.

The allied forces targeted Al-Shabaab headquarters in the area, While the operation was taking place there was a meeting of members of Al-Shabaab, including leaders.

The army and their friends managed to destroy the place and he was killed there, and two vehicles were also burnt, according to a press release from the Federal Government.

This operation coincides with the second phase of the war against Al-Shabaab in the whole country, and it is expected that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, will make an announcement in Dhusamareb, the capital of the Galgaduud Region.

Starting in August 2022, the Somali government launched a fresh offensive against Al-Shabaab, capitalizing on mounting discontent with the Islamist insurgency, particularly among the politically dominant Hawiye clan.

The operation has yielded the most comprehensive territorial gains since the mid-2010s, as soldiers fighting alongside clan militias dislodge Al-Shabaab militants from significant parts of central Somalia.

The government’s push marks a breakthrough in a war that has raged for more than fifteen years.
