MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s government has confirmed the detention of a senior officer from the Macawiisley militia, a pro-government clan-based force engaged in the ongoing battle against Al-Shabaab militants in Hirshabelle.

The Macawiisley militia, primarily made up of pastoralist herders, plays a significant role in countering Al-Shabaab’s presence in central Somalia. The militia is known for its support of government forces in the fight against the insurgent group.

A military helicopter reportedly transported the detained officer from the Middle Shabelle region to Mogadishu after an operation. The officer, identified as Wabiir, was recently seen in a video filmed by Al-Shabaab, raising suspicions about his possible links to the extremist group.

Wabiir was later observed in areas controlled by both the Somali government and the Macawiisley militia, further intensifying concerns regarding his loyalty. The government has launched an investigation into whether he provided assistance to Al-Shabaab.

Major General Hassan Ali Nuur Shuute, Chairman of the Somali Armed Forces Court, confirmed that a thorough inquiry would be conducted, as authorities remain keen to establish whether Wabiir acted in collaboration with the militants.

The case has sparked online debates, with social media users questioning Wabiir’s possible ties to Al-Shabaab, given that it is believed that individuals in his position cannot easily escape the group’s control. The Somali government has pledged to intensify efforts to uncover the truth and ensure accountability for anyone found cooperating with Al-Shabaab.
