MOGADISHU, Somalia — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia expressed his deep condolences on Sunday to the family, relatives, Somali Army, and the nation following the death of Senior Col. Nur Mohamed Gaabow, commander of the 14th October Brigade.

In a statement, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud hailed Nur Farey, as a “patriotic and devoted officer” who sacrificed his life defending Somalia and its people’s freedom.

The president offered prayers for Allah’s mercy on the fallen commander and all military martyrs. Nur Farey was reportedly shot dead by a gunman in a military uniform while addressing troops readied for anti-Al-Shabaab push.

Mohamud announced that the federal government had launched a comprehensive investigation into the terrorist attack that killed Gaabow, a young Somali army officer.

He underscored the administration’s resolve to escalate efforts against terrorist groups destabilizing the country. In the past three years, several high-ranking Somali army officers were killed in Al-Shabaab attacks.

The statement did not specify the date or location of the attack. Somalia has faced ongoing security challenges from militant groups, including al-Shabab, which frequently targets military and government officials.
