Somali military court hands down death sentences to soldiers for shooting

MOGADISHU (SMN) – In yet what would send a stern warning, the Somali military court handed down more death sentences to soldiers within the country’s armed forces for shooting eight people.

Abdulkadir Hassan Abdulle [Sheelare], Ahmed Mire Osman Fidow [Dhagaweyne], Mohamud Abdi Mohamed, and Abdullahi Osman Isak have been sentenced to death and will face the firing squad.

Ayanle Mohamed Diriye Warsame and Sayid Ali Abdullahi were given each five years of imprisonment for their role in a deadly night-time shootout at Siinaay junction in Mogadishu on 27th February 2023

During the hearing of their cases, the court played shocking CCTV footage showing the gunfight between the police manning the intersection and the security escorts of the Yaqshid district commissioner.

Abdikarim Shafi’I Osman, Ali Isak Abdikarim, Siyad Abdullahi Hirsi, and Mohamed Ali Abdullahi were slapped with 3-year jail terms, according to the verdict. They have one month to appeal the ruling.

The court said it acquitted Ahmed Ali, a defendant who was “not found guilty” of the crime charged.
