BARAWE, Somalia — Somali military and security forces conducted an operation near the coastal town of Barawe in the Lower Shabelle region, seizing a boat loaded with small arms and ammunition.

The boat, which was docked on the coast of Barawe without a known destination, was intercepted by the army, leading to the arrest of three individuals suspected of carrying the seized weapons.

Security agencies are currently investigating the intended destination of the illegal weapons, which have not been officially identified.

Although Al-Shabaab fighters, who are battling the federal government of Somalia, are active in the region and have previously carried out attacks in parts of the Lower Shabelle areas, it is unclear to whom these weapons were intended to be delivered.

The region is also home to tribal militias who have been involved in conflicts in parts of the Lower Shabelle areas and have used illegal weapons.

The incident highlights the ongoing issue of illegal weapons in the country, which are in the possession of private individuals, militias, and armed groups.

The operation is part of ongoing efforts by the Somali military to curb the proliferation of illegal arms and maintain security in the region.
