BAARDHEERE, Somalia – Clashes broke out early Wednesday in Baardheere, Gedo region, as Somali federal government troops attacked the district headquarters, following the expulsion of pro-government forces by Jubaland earlier in the week.
The Somali National Army (SNA) was at the forefront of the assault, which led to the death of several individuals, including Caagane Ilyaas, a government-appointed Social Affairs Officer for the district. Additional government officials were also killed.
The fighting has inflicted considerable damage, with civilians caught in the crossfire, leading to injuries. The violence has escalated, causing mass displacement among the local population, who are fleeing the ongoing conflict.
The security environment in Baardheere is tense, with the local community facing severe disruptions due to the fighting.
This incident adds to the ongoing disputes between the Somali Federal Government and the Jubaland administration, with previous conflicts noted in areas like Raadkaambooni and Doolow over control and influence. The tension between these groups continues to fuel instability in Gedo.
The battle in Baardheere reflects the broader, volatile security and political landscape in Somalia’s southwestern regions.
