MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s lower house of parliament has passed a landmark bill aimed at improving the protection and rights of internally displaced persons (IDPs), lawmakers confirmed.
In a session held earlier on Saturday, the House of the People of the Federal Parliament overwhelmingly approved the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Bill, with 136 members voting in favour, four against, and none abstaining.
The legislation, which seeks to establish a legal framework for the support and integration of IDPs across the country, marks a significant step toward addressing the needs of millions displaced by conflict, climate shocks, and insecurity.
“This bill represents our commitment to ensuring the dignity and rights of our displaced citizens,” a parliament leadership said.
The bill will now proceed to the Upper House for further consideration before being signed into law by the president of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
