MOGADISHU — The Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia has outlined a sweeping transformation of the country’s education system, describing a recent nationwide teacher recruitment drive as a major milestone in structural reform and national sovereignty.

Over the past 45 months, the administration has rebuilt the teaching workforce through a targeted strategy. When it took office, only 900 teachers were on the government payroll, and fewer than one in four children had access to schooling.

Through an aggressive national rollout, the government has now recruited and deployed 10,000 trained teachers across urban centers and remote regions. The Prime Minister confirmed that the federal target is to expand the workforce to 12,000 teachers by 2026.

A key highlight of the reform is the shift away from external financial dependence. For the first time in modern Somali history, salaries for these educators are fully funded through domestic revenue, signaling stronger state capacity to sustain core public services independently.

The reforms have also boosted public confidence and standardized the education system. Higher education records now show nearly 250,000 graduates and 200,000 current students, while participation in national Grade 12 exams has surged from 7,000 to 39,000 candidates.

In a landmark development for national unity, students in Las Anod sat for federal exams for the first time in three decades, marking the region’s reintegration into the national education framework.

While acknowledging that Somalia will ultimately need up to 120,000 teachers to achieve universal access to education, the Prime Minister said the latest gains demonstrate that rebuilding the federal system is firmly underway, with a new generation being prepared to lead the country forward.
