MOGADISHU – Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Thursday held talks with former president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed as preparations continue for dialogue between the federal government and the Somali Future Council, officials said.
The visit was described as part of efforts to demonstrate goodwill and foster closer ties with former national leaders to create conditions for a durable political settlement.
Former prime minister Hassan Ali Khaire, who is also a member of the council, attended the meeting. Participants discussed security, political developments and the ongoing negotiation process.
Barre said the government’s “platform remains open” to all political actors willing to engage in dialogue, underscoring the importance of consensus to move the country forward and intensify operations against the Al-Shabaab insurgency.
The meeting ended with an agreement to strengthen consultations and work jointly toward shaping Somalia’s political future, those present said.
