NEW YORK, USA – The prime minister of Somalia Hamza Abdi Barre has interacted with top global leaders at the UN General Assembly’s 78th session in New York City, the USA.

On Friday, Barre had the opportunity to meet with US President Joe Biden as part of the continued efforts by Somalia’s PM to turn world attention to the current crisis in his country.

The talks between US President Joe Biden and the PM focused on strengthening bilateral relations, boosting security cooperation, and US assistance in Somalia’s pursuit of stability and development.

“With Somalia seeking the UN Security Council to lift the arms embargo, PM Barre has also requested the US’s support for the government’s efforts,” said the office of the premier.

Prior to Biden’s meeting, Barre engaged in a productive discussion with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The Prime Minister said he and the US Secretary of State focused on enhancing bilateral ties between Somalia and the United States, mainly in the fight against Al-Shabaab.

Somalia remains key to the security environment in East Africa. U.S. Africa Command’s forces will continue training, advising, and equipping Danab partner forces to give them the tools that they need to degrade al-Shabaab.

Al-Shabaab is the largest and most kinetically active al-Qaeda network in the world and has proved both its will and capability to attack partner and U.S. forces and threaten U.S. security interests.
