TANGIER, Morocco, Nov 28, 2025 — Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Friday visited Morocco’s Tanger Med Port, one of Africa’s largest maritime hubs and a key gateway for global trade, as part of his working trip to the North African kingdom.

Tanger Med — the biggest port complex in Africa and the Mediterranean — links commercial routes between Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas, handling more than 20 percent of the world’s container traffic. Its strategic location has made it a central pillar in international logistics and economic integration.

During his tour, Barre held what officials described as “fruitful discussions” with Mehdi Tazi Riffi, the head of Tanger Med Port Authority. The two discussed strengthening port cooperation, easing trade flows, and sharing expertise on major infrastructure development between the two nations.

Barre said the visit reflected his government’s wider push to boost Somalia’s economic recovery by investing in critical infrastructure and expanding international partnerships, including with Morocco.

The talks also come as Somali ports undergo significant development. The ports of Mogadishu and Berbera recently earned international recognition, while the Somali government’s “Dan Qaran” administration is pursuing modernization projects and planning new major port facilities across the country.
