Somali president arrives in Italy ahead of UN Summit

ROME, Italy – The President of Somalia has arrived in Rome to attend a three-day high-level United Nations Food Systems Summit Stock.

 

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud departed the country on Sunday accompanied by foreign minister and other senior officials to represent Somalia in the Summit.

The Summit is set to kick off on Monday, July 23, 2023. Mohamud will deliver a speech on current food insecurity situation in Somalia.

His address will set the stage for the Heads of State session, to be attended by Italy’s Prime Minister Georgia Meloni and UN chief Antonio  Guterres, to discuss the critical issue of food security.

The Summit will also discuss, at length, the school meals programme in which States also work with other partners in ensuring pupils in public primary schools receive food and balanced rations, to promote health and education.

Somalia faced worst drought in 40 years which impacted 8 million people, majority of them pastrolists and farmers.
