Somali President arrives in New York for Crucial Security Conference

NEW YORK – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his delegation arrived in New York City on Monday, December 11, 2023. This visit is a move aimed at strengthening support and collaboration.

 

The President’s main focus during his time in New York is to participate in the anticipated Somalia Security Conference, scheduled for Tuesday, December 13.

The primary objective of this conference is to bring global leaders, security experts, and policymakers to engage in discussions and formulate comprehensive strategies that will enhance security and stability in Somalia. The nation considers this conference as a platform for addressing its security challenges and promoting international partnerships.

During the conference, President Mohamud is expected to hold meetings with leaders and security experts. These meetings will provide Somalia with an opportunity to showcase its progress and continued efforts in peacekeeping and nation-building. Additionally, the President’s agenda includes discussions on terrorism strategies, economic development initiatives, and humanitarian assistance.

This gathering sees participation from over thirty countries, recognizing the takeover of the Somali security forces. By the end of 2024, the security responsibilities of the country are expected to be fully managed by Somali forces, marking a major step towards self-reliance and sovereign integrity.

The Somalia Security Conference is being widely recognized as a step towards fostering cooperation in supporting the Somali government’s endeavors to achieve long-lasting peace and stability.

The President was received by Ambassador Abukar Dahir Osman, Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. The outcomes of this conference are eagerly awaited, as it is expected to mark a historic moment in Somalia’s journey towards a peaceful and prosperous future.
