MOGADISHU, Somalia — At a reception event for Türkiye’s seismic exploration vessel, Oruç Reis, at Mogadishu seaport, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud emphasized the arrival of the ship as a pivotal moment for Somalia.

“The presence of Oruç Reis here today symbolizes not just Somalia’s technological advancement but also our growing appeal to international investors,” President Mohamud declared. He further elaborated, “This is more than just an exploration mission; it’s a testament to our commitment to harnessing our natural resources for the prosperity of our people.”

The event underscores Somalia’s strategic efforts to enhance its maritime capabilities and deepen economic ties with international partners, which is crucial for a country striving to rebuild and stabilize following years of conflict.

This initiative marks a broader spectrum of diplomatic and economic cooperation between Somalia and Türkiye. Interest in Somalia’s maritime potential, particularly in oil and gas exploration, has surged, with Oruç Reis’s visit being a significant step towards tapping into these resources, potentially revolutionizing Somalia’s economic landscape.

President Mohamud also addressed the geopolitical implications of such collaborations, stating, “We are not just looking at immediate economic gains but are laying the foundation for long-term partnerships that respect our sovereignty and contribute to our national development.”

This sentiment was echoed in broader remarks where Mohamud touched upon the importance of international recognition and cooperation, especially in light of recent regional agreements that have stirred debate on Somalia’s territorial integrity, like the 2024 Ethiopia-Somaliland memorandum of understanding. “Somaliland is an integral part of Somalia under our constitution,” he firmly stated, reflecting on the challenges of maintaining national unity amidst external agreements.

The President’s focus on leveraging Somalia’s strategic location and untapped resources for economic growth and stability was clear. “We are at a crossroads where our natural wealth can pave the way for a new era of prosperity,” Mohamud concluded, emphasizing the need for international partnerships while safeguarding national interests.

This event not only highlights Somalia’s economic aspirations but also its diplomatic finesse in navigating complex regional dynamics, aiming to secure its place on the global stage through strategic international cooperation.
