Somali president chairs urgent cabinet session on flood crisis

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The president of Somalia Hassan Sheikh chaired the meeting of the Cabinet after returning from Saudi Arabia, where he attended the Saudi-Africa summit.

 

The extraordinary meeting discussed the impact of the ongoing floods caused by heavy rains in parts of the country, which claimed the lives of 33 people and thousands displaced.

PM Hamza Abdi Barre briefed the president on the ongoing emergency and the relief efforts as the government has appointed a national committee to deal with the floods.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who spoke at the meeting, praised the Government for its efforts to rescue the people and asked it to redouble the noble life-saving operations.

Mohamud called on the Somali people in the riverine areas to go to the highlands to escape the imminent floods after the Juba and Shabelle rivers began to burst their banks.

In addition, during the meeting, the Somali cabinet voted to endorse the Regulation on the Financial Transactions Verification System and Communication Quality Assurance.

Authorities said the Heavy rains have caused flash floods in Somalia, displacing half a million people and killing more than 33 people, including women and children.

Notely, Since the beginning of November this year, Somalia located in the Horn of AFrica has been battered by relentless rains, with torrents of water flooding homes and farmland.
