MOGADISHU, Somalia – The president of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held a closed-door meeting with military and police chiefs in Mogadishu on Thursday.
The defence minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, National Security advisor Hussain Moalim, state minister for presidency Abshir Bukhari were in attendance.
According to Villa Somalia statement, the conference focused on the speed up of the second phase of the military operations against Al-Shabaab and ensuring security in the newly liberated areas.
The president said Al-Shabaab will be eliminated from Al-Shabaab entire country in short time of period, mostly likely before the end of his tenure in early 2026.
The Government launched an offensive against Al-Shabaab in August 2022 that led to recapture of dozens of areas, including key strongholds in central Somalia.
The frontline states – Kenya, Ethiopia and Kenya are expected to deploy non-ATMIS troops to Somalia to take part in the final operation to defeat Al-Shabaab.
The US military provides support to Somalia in war on Al-Shabaab by carrying out airstrikes against the main targets of the group.
