MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is set to travel to the United States in the coming weeks to attend the annual United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, government officials confirmed on Saturday.

The high-level gathering, scheduled for early September, will bring together world leaders to discuss pressing global issues, ranging from security and development to climate change and international cooperation.

President Mohamud is expected to use his address to highlight key priorities for Somalia, including national security, the ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab, economic recovery, and preparations for the country’s upcoming elections scheduled for 2026.

“The president’s participation will be an important opportunity to share Somalia’s progress and challenges with the international community,” a senior official at Villa Somalia told Radio Shabelle.

While internal political tensions remain over the election roadmap, the Somali federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to holding direct elections and advancing democratic reforms.

The president is also expected to hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the General Assembly with leaders from partner nations and international organizations.

Preparations for the presidential trip are currently underway at Somalia’s Embassy in Washington DC, with the visit seen as part of broader efforts to strengthen Somalia’s diplomatic engagement and international standing.
