MAHAS, Somalia – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Sunday arrived in the town of Mahaas in the Hiran region as SNA forces gear up for the 2nd phase of the Al-Shabaab war.

“President Hassan Sheikh during his stay in Mahas will hold talks with the SNA officers, members of the civil defence forces, the authorities and the local community, on how to double the war against Terrorism,” said the office of the president in a statement.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has been working temporarily in the town of Dhusamareb for weeks on a mission for the local community mobilization and the SNA.

The President said his commitment to the fight against Al-Shabaab will continue and there be no return until the liberation of the whole country and brings an end to Al-Shabaab’s presence in Somalia.

Hassan Sheikh who was elected in May 2022 as the 10th head of state underlined that his government will win the war as it enjoys the full support of its people both at home and abroad.

In August 2022, Mohamud has launched a “total war” against al-Shabaab. In the first phase, Somali forces concentrated on the central regions but now face few setbacks.

The first stage was the most effective offensive since 2016, expelling al-Shabaab from areas it had controlled for over a decade, and the government is set to launch phase two to attack al-Shabaab in the south.
