MOGADISHU – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has hailed the completion of the national constitution as a “historic milestone,” praising federal lawmakers for their resilience and dedication during a high-stakes legislative process.
Speaking during an Iftar dinner hosted for members of both houses of the Federal Parliament, the president commended the legislators for their sense of national responsibility in finalizing the document, which has been under review for years.
“This achievement is a historic step that strengthens our statehood, unity, and democratic system,” Mohamud told the gathering. He emphasized that the completed constitution would serve as the bedrock for building robust state institutions, protecting citizens’ rights, and fostering a governance system rooted in the rule of law and accountability.
The president issued a special commendation to the Somali experts and technical committees who spearheaded the drafting process. He noted that the national agreement was reached through internal collaboration and local expertise, rather than a reliance on foreign assistance.
“This is a victory achieved through domestic effort and cooperation, reflecting the interests of the Somali people,” he added.
The move marks a significant political victory for the Mohamud administration, despite ongoing friction with some regional states and opposition figures over the specifics of the amendments.
Concluding his address, the president urged lawmakers and government agencies to further strengthen their cooperation to ensure “complete statehood” that reflects the aspirations and future of the Somali people.
