NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 17 – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held a bilateral meeting on Tuesday with Kenyan President William Ruto in Nairobi, as part of a condolence visit following the death of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.

The two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral relations between Somalia and Kenya, with a focus on security cooperation, regional stability, and trade ties, according to a statement from the Somali presidency.

President Mohamud thanked President Ruto for what he described as Kenya’s “warm hospitality and continued support,” especially as Somalia continues its fight against the militant group Al-Shabaab.

He also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to deepening ties with Kenya and praised Nairobi’s contribution to peacekeeping efforts in Somalia, particularly under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which is transitioning into the new African Union Stabilization Support to Somalia Mission (AUSSOM).

The meeting comes at a critical time for Somalia, as it seeks to consolidate security gains, attract investment, and expand regional cooperation.

Kenya remains a key partner in Somalia’s stabilization efforts, both as a troop-contributing country and through diplomatic and economic collaboration.

No further details were immediately available regarding the discussions on AUSSOM or next steps in bilateral cooperation.
