MOGADISHU, Somalia — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed his condolences following the death of Senator Mohamed Ali Yusuf Gaagaab in Turkey, the presidency announced Tuesday.
In a statement released by the presidential office, Mohamud praised the late senator for his dedication and service to the Somali people. “Senator Gaagaab’s contributions to our nation will be remembered and honored,” the president said.

Gaagaab, who was known for his work in promoting peace and development in Somalia, had been in Turkey for medical treatment, sources confirmed. However, the specific cause of his death has not been made public.

The senator was a prominent figure in Somali politics, notably serving on several key committees within the Senate. His advocacy for education and infrastructure improvements in his home region had earned him widespread respect among both constituents and colleagues.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be coordinated between Turkey and Somalia, with plans for Gaagaab’s body to be repatriated for burial in his home country. The Somali community both at home and abroad has begun mourning, with numerous messages of condolence flooding social media platforms.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, along with other government officials, have also extended their sympathies to the family, friends, and constituents of the deceased senator.

This loss comes at a time when Somalia is undergoing significant political and social transitions, with the government focusing on security, economic recovery, and national rebuilding. Senator Gaagaab’s absence will undoubtedly be felt in these efforts.
