MOGADISHU, Somalia – The president of Somalia will join the global leaders at the UNEA-6 conference in Nairobi, Kenya on Thursday, reports said.
Hassan Sheikh will leave Mogadishu for Nairobi in the coming hours, according to sources.
He will attend the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly(UNEA) summit which commenced Monday and entered its second day today with various committee meetings lined up.
Among the discussions during the day are agriculture and soil health, transboundary ecosystem restoration, and the impacts of war and heavy industry on pollution.
“We’re committed to fighting climate change and promoting sustainability for all,” said Minister of Environment & Climate Change of Somalia Khadija Al-Makhzoumi.
UNEA is the world’s top decision-making body on the environment.
It aims to help restore harmony between humanity and nature, improving the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people.
UNEA-6 will focus on how multilateralism can help tackle the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.
Somalia has ratified the Environmental Protection and Management Law, a crucial step towards safeguarding our natural surroundings and promoting sustainable development.
