MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is set to travel on the 15th of this month to Las Anod, the capital of the SSC-Khaatumo administration, to attend the inauguration of the region’s newly elected president, sources said.
Reliable sources within Villa Somalia told Shabelle that the president’s visit is expected to take place on Thursday, with official confirmation to be issued by the presidency.
The inauguration will see the participation of senior federal government officials and leaders from Somalia’s federal member states, according to the sources.
President Abdiqadir Aw-Ali Firdhiye, who leads the SSC-Khaatumo administration, is to be formally sworn in during the ceremony.
The visit comes amid heightened political tensions following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, which previously claimed control over parts of the SSC-Khaatumo areas but which Mogadishu now recognizes as a federal administration within Somalia.
