ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, during a two-day visit to Ethiopia, toured historical sites including a visit to what was described by the Ethiopian government as its naval forces.
Photos from the visit depict President Mohamud receiving a salute from soldiers in white uniforms, believed to be part of Ethiopia’s naval forces, despite the country not having a coastline.
Ethiopia’s push for naval capabilities has been linked to its historical maritime ambitions, particularly in relation to Somalia.
The visit also included a tribute to soldiers who perished in the 1977 war between Somalia and Ethiopia, with the delegation laying wreaths at memorials dedicated to those who fell in the conflict.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud departed Ethiopia on Sunday after talks with Abiy Ahmed that ended the diplomatic tension between the two contries.
