MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali government forces have successfully conducted a mission targeting the militant group Al-Shabaab in the Lower Shabelle region. The operation, which unfolded in the areas between Afgoye and Wanlawain districts, was aimed at disrupting the activities of the group and reclaiming control of territories under their influence.

According to the Ministry of Defense spokesperson, Abukar Mohamed Hassan, the operation resulted in the liberation of nearly 20 vehicles that had been seized by Al-Shabaab. These vehicles were reportedly being used by the group to generate funds through extortion and other illicit means.

The operation also led to the neutralization of several Al-Shabaab militants in the areas where the operations were executed. While the exact number of casualties on the side of the militants was not disclosed, the Ministry of Defense highlighted the strategic importance of the operation in weakening the group’s operational capabilities in the region.

Lower Shabelle has long been a stronghold for Al-Shabaab, with the group frequently launching attacks on military and civilian targets. The recent operation by the Somali government forces marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to secure the region and protect local communities from the violence perpetrated by the extremist group.

The Somali government, with support from international partners, continues to intensify its efforts to eradicate Al-Shabaab and restore peace and stability in the affected areas. This operation is part of a broader strategy to disrupt the group’s funding and recruitment networks, and to strengthen the security infrastructure in the region.

The Ministry of Defense has expressed its commitment to continue such operations in order to ensure the safety and security of the Somali people and to prevent further acts of terrorism by Al-Shabaab.
