MOGADISHU, Somalia – The SNA forces with the help of the US military carried out a planned operation to kill members of the Al-Shabaab in the Lower Jubba region, Jubaland.
The joint operation took place in an area, about 45 km to the north of Kismayo, the capital of the Lower Jubba region, according to a statement issued by the government.
The statement indicated that four members of Al-Shabaab were killed in the operation.
There were no casualties of civilians in the area as a result of the Somali-US operation targeting Al-Shabaab members in the Lower Jubba region under Jubaland state control.
The allied forces are engaged in battles against the Al-Shabaab in Somalia amid intensified operation which gains ground in HirShabelle and Galmudug state, central regions.
The U.S. has an estimated 450 military personnel in Somalia after President Joe Biden reversed his predecessor Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw American forces.
The U.S. supports Somali forces and a multinational African Union force with drone strikes, intelligence, and training the Danab brigade, an elite SNA unit.
The increased support for the Somalia-led offensive comes as the AU force is set to withdraw from the country and hand over security responsibilities to Somalia by the end of 2024.
