Mogadishu, Somalia – Somali intelligence forces, backed by international partners, have killed at least 12 Al-Shabaab fighters — including senior commanders — in a special operation carried out in the Aadan Yabaal district of central Somalia, NISA said Friday.

The operation, led by the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), targeted a strategic compound used by the militants in the Middle Shabelle region. According to the government, the site served as a key logistical hub where Al-Shabaab stockpiled weapons and organized militant deployments.

“Several top Al-Shabaab figures were eliminated in the raid, which was executed successfully,” the Somali Intelligence Agency [NISA] said in a statement, noting that battle vehicles, large quantities of weapons, and other military supplies were also destroyed.

The spy agency confirmed that the identities of the slain commanders would be released following full verification. These individuals were reportedly involved in orchestrating attacks against civilians and state institutions across Somalia.

The Somali government reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating the jihadist group, emphasizing that with continued public support and international cooperation, Al-Shabaab leaders “have no safe haven left.”

This latest operation forms part of an intensified military campaign aimed at dismantling Al-Shabaab’s operational capacity across the country. The group, affiliated with Al-Qaeda, continues to wage an insurgency despite suffering territorial losses in recent months.
