MOGADISHU, Somalia – The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), formerly AMISOM, is in the midst of deciding its next deputy leader. This development within the commission, led by Moussa Faki Mahamat, has caught many eyes.
The position went vacant in late 2022 after the departure of South Africa’s interim officer, Fiona Lortan. Since then, both Somalia and Djibouti have lobbied fervently for the selection of Djibouti’s seasoned diplomat, Mouktar Osman Karie. Mr. Karie, a distinguished civil servant, has dedicated over a decade to the peace and security department, currently operating under the aegis of Nigerian Commissioner, Bankole Adeoye.
Somalia’s support for Karie is clear, but the Commission’s top office isn’t rushing the decision. However, they’re expected to announce something soon.
On March 31, Somalia’s foreign minister sent a formal message to President Moussa Faki, emphasizing their backing for Karie. Djibouti’s lead diplomat, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, also stood up for him.
Currently, Mohamed El-Amine Souef, former chief diplomat from the Comoros, leads ATMIS, skillfully managing the region’s complex politics.
