ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met on the sidelines of the 38th Ordinary Summit of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU in Addis Ababa, reaffirming their commitment to deepening bilateral relations and enhancing regional security.

The meeting came after both countries successfully resolved a diplomatic crisis that had arisen in late 2022, with Turkey playing a crucial role in mediating and facilitating dialogue between the two nations.

The crisis, which had escalated due to political tensions, particularly concerning security and trade issues, was addressed through Turkey’s diplomatic intervention in December of last year. The successful mediation led to a breakthrough in their relations, paving the way for a renewed partnership.

At Thursday’s summit meeting, the two leaders discussed strengthening their cooperation on regional security and stability, with a focus on mutual support in combating terrorism and fostering economic growth. They stressed the importance of partnership and sustained engagement, recognizing the shared challenges facing the Horn of Africa.

“Strengthening the ties between Somalia and Ethiopia is essential for the peace, prosperity, and development of the Horn of Africa,” President Mohamud stated. Prime Minister Abiy echoed his counterpart’s sentiments, noting that the resolution of the diplomatic crisis and the strengthening of bilateral relations would create a more stable and prosperous future for both nations.

The two leaders also agreed to continue collaboration on regional security initiatives and counterterrorism efforts, particularly against the threat of militant groups in the region. Their discussions underscored the importance of working together to address economic challenges, improve trade relations, and foster long-term stability in East Africa.

The diplomatic breakthrough, following months of tensions, marks a new chapter in Somalia-Ethiopia relations, one that is focused on collaboration and mutual support. The two leaders expressed optimism that their strengthened partnership would contribute to the broader goals of peace and development in the Horn of Africa.
