MOGADISHU – Somalia’s Cabinet of Ministers has approved substantial amendments to the Penal Code and ratified a policy to establish a Higher Institute for Legal Training and Development, officials said on Wednesday.
In a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre, the government outlined its commitment to modernizing the legal framework.
The changes, initiated by the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, are designed to bring Somali law in line with international norms, enhance legal education, and strengthen both security and economic stability.
The session also covered updates in diplomacy, highlighting Somalia’s efforts to fortify international relationships, and security, with ongoing initiatives to maintain peace. Economic discussions focused on resilience strategies against global economic fluctuations.
This move is part of broader reforms aimed at improving governance and legal systems in Somalia, with the new institute expected to play a critical role in fostering a more equitable legal environment.
The establishment of the Higher Institute for Legal Training and Development is particularly noteworthy, as it is expected to serve as a foundational step towards cultivating a more equitable and legally informed society.
