MOGADISHU, Sept 1, 2025 — Somalia’s military court on Monday morning carried out the execution of two members of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab group, who were convicted of carrying out targeted assassinations in the capital, officials said.
The two men — identified as Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, also known as “Maaxi” or “Younis,” and Ibrahim Adan Maadey — were executed by firing squad early in the morning in Mogadishu, following a final ruling by the Armed Forces Court.
According to the court, the men were part of al-Shabaab’s assassination units responsible for ambush-style killings targeting civilians, government officials, and members of the security forces.
“They were involved in deliberate killings of prominent individuals in Mogadishu,” the court said in a statement, adding that the executions were carried out after all legal procedures and appeals were exhausted.
Somalia’s military court has intensified the prosecution and execution of convicted al-Shabaab operatives in recent months, as the government ramps up efforts to dismantle the group’s urban networks.
Al-Shabaab, which has waged a deadly insurgency in Somalia for over a decade, frequently carries out bombings and targeted attacks in Mogadishu and other regions under government control.
The group aims to topple the internationally backed government based in Mogadishu.
