LONDON – Somalia has submitted its official instruments of accession to the International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO) as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen maritime security and governance, the country’s maritime minister said Friday.

Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, Somalia’s Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, handed the documents to IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 34th Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London.

According to Somali officials, the move marks a significant step in the government’s drive to modernize its maritime institutions, improve oversight of sea lanes and expand cooperation with global maritime agencies.

The meeting was attended by the Director of the Mogadishu Port Authority, Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur (Ameriko), and Somalia’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, Cabdulqaadir Cabdi Xaashi.

Discussions focused on how Somalia’s new partnership with IMSO could bolster maritime security, support institutional reforms, enhance coastal protection frameworks and deepen international collaboration.

Officials said participation in the IMO Assembly will open new avenues for Somalia as it works to rebuild its maritime administration and reaffirm its role in global maritime affairs.
