Somalia: General Sheegoow Ahmed Ali who Died in Custody Laid to Rest in Hometown

Sheegoow, who was widely recognized for his efforts to unite his clan and secure political representation in Somalia, had been hospitalized at Digfeer Hospital in Mogadishu before his death.

Health officials reported that he succumbed to complications from hepatitis B, which caused severe liver failure.

The Somali government had arrested Sheegoow after a confrontation between his loyalists and government security forces. He was later tried and sentenced by a military court. The funeral procession began at the hospital and continued through the capital before his body was flown to Jowhar and then driven to Baqdaad for burial. Thousands of mourners, including civilians and military personnel, attended the funeral.

Tensions flared during the procession, with brief clashes between security forces and soldiers who had accompanied Sheegoow’s body. Despite the unrest, the government has maintained that it took all necessary measures to provide medical care for Sheegoow. The Minister of Health confirmed the cause of death and released medical documents to address speculation surrounding the circumstances.

Some political leaders from Sheegoow’s clan have raised concerns over his death, fueling suspicions that it may not have been entirely natural. However, the government has insisted that it acted appropriately and that his death was due to health complications.
