Somalia marks Independence Day

MOGADISHU, Somalia [SMN] – Somalia commemorates the 63rd anniversary of the independence of the southern regions from the Italian colony and the union with northern regions on July 1, 1960, when the Republic of Somalia was born.

 

The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who participated in the event, greeted the troops of the country’s armed forces, shortly before the flag raising at midnight, 12 am.

Many cities in the country held celebrations to celebrate the First of July.

In the end, Somali President congratulated the people for the independence day and revealed that his government will rename government buildings in memory of the notable heroes and people who fought for the country.

During the event, Somali President, Prime Minister and notable Somali figures addressed the crowd about country’s course for independence.

Now, the al-Qaida linked group has been weakened militarily and financially, and African forces are preparing to move against the group’s last strongholds in southern regions.
