MOGADISHU, Somalia — On Tuesday, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre joined hundreds at an event in Mogadishu to commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, hosted by the Ministry of Family and Human Rights Development.
The gathering focused on this year’s theme, “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future,” highlighting the need for more inclusive policies and opportunities in leadership roles.
The World Health Organization notes that persons with disabilities constitute 16% of the global population, yet they are significantly underrepresented in leadership, particularly in the health sector. Common obstacles include systemic discrimination, societal stigma, and limited access to education and job opportunities, which perpetuate exclusion.
During the event, various speakers, including government officials, activists, and representatives from international organizations, discussed the current state of disability rights in Somalia. They emphasized the importance of legislative changes to ensure equal participation in society for those with disabilities.
Prime Minister Barre, in his address, promised to enhance efforts towards inclusivity, stating, “We must break down the barriers that prevent our fellow citizens with disabilities from participating equally in our nation’s development.” He outlined plans for new policies aimed at improving accessibility in public buildings and services, and increasing employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.
The event also featured personal testimonies from individuals with disabilities who shared their experiences and the challenges they face daily. Their stories underscored the urgent need for change and societal acceptance.
As the commemoration continued, there were workshops and panels discussing practical steps towards inclusion, such as training programs for employers to adapt their workplaces to be more disability-friendly and initiatives to increase educational opportunities for children with disabilities.
The day’s activities were part of a broader effort to not only raise awareness but also to push for tangible policy changes that would lead to a more inclusive society in Somalia. The event concluded with a call to action for continued advocacy and the implementation of inclusive practices across all sectors of Somali society.
