Mogadishu, Somalia | A Somali lawmaker has confirmed that a no-confidence motion is being prepared against Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, amid growing political tensions within the country.
MP Abdiladif Muse Nur (Sanyare), a member of the House of the People in Somalia’s Federal Parliament, said the motion is scheduled to be submitted on Saturday, August 23, 2025, “God willing.”
According to Sanyare, 120 MPs have already signed the motion, with just 20 more signatures needed for it to be formally tabled in parliament.
“The no-confidence motion against the government of Hamza Abdi Barre, which is expected to be presented on Saturday, August 23, has already been signed by 120 MPs. We only need 20 more. Any MP wishing to join or ‘worship’, as I put it, should contact me directly,” Sanyare said in a social media post.
While the MP did not elaborate on the specific reasons behind the move, sources suggest internal disagreements over governance and dissatisfaction with the prime minister’s performance may be at the heart of the effort.
Political motions of this kind are not unprecedented in Somalia, where parliamentary democracy has seen several no-confidence votes in recent years. Such motions must follow a constitutional process as outlined in the country’s provisional constitution and the internal rules of the House of the People.
