MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Prime Minister of Somalia today left the country for Qatar on an official visit to the Gulf nation, which has political influence in the Horn of Africa country.
During his trip, PM Hamza Abdi Barre will hold talks with the leaders of Qatar on the strengthening of bilateral relations and cooperation in all areas of mutual interest between Somalia and Qatar.
The Prime Minister’s delegation includes the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abshir Omar Jama Huruuse, Minister of Finance Bihi Iman Cige, Minister of Internal Security Mohamed Ahmed Sheikh Doodishe, Minister of Education Farah Sheikh Abdulqadir, and other officials.
The government of Qatar plays a major role in the state-building process in Somalia, especially in the areas of economic infrastructure development, security, and humanitarian issues.
Doha has also implemented projects in Somalia to rebuild some of the country’s roads that were destroyed during the civil war. It spent $200 million on the 30-km road that connects the capital to Afgoye and Bal’ad.
The two countries formally established diplomatic ties in 1970. Qatar has had close ties with the former administration led by Farmajo, who ruled Somalia from 2017 to 2022.
