MOGADISHU — Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Saturday praised the country’s police force for security gains and urged officers to prepare to safeguard upcoming one-person, one-vote elections in the capital, officials said.

Speaking at events marking the 82nd anniversary of the Somali Police Force, Mohamud congratulated senior commanders and rank-and-file officers, commending what he described as visible progress in improving security, rebuilding police stations and upgrading personnel.

“The Somali Police, since their establishment in 1943, have stood for the protection of the lives, dignity and property of the Somali people,” the president said, thanking officers who have sacrificed their lives for national security.

Mohamud called on police leadership to ensure forces are fully prepared to secure the planned elections in the Benadir region, stressing adherence to the rule of law and accountability. “Every officer will be held responsible for the duties entrusted to them,” he said.

The ceremony was attended by cabinet ministers, lawmakers, military chiefs, former police commanders, diplomats and other guests.

Somalia has sought to strengthen its security institutions as it prepares for electoral reforms amid persistent threats from Islamist militants.
