MOGADISHU — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held phone talks with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on Saturday, focusing on safeguarding Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the presidency said.
According to a statement, President Mohamud briefed the Qatari leader on Somalia’s firm position against what he described as plans and actions that threaten the country’s unity and national independence. He also underlined Somalia’s strategic location and its importance to security and stability in the Horn of Africa.
Sheikh Tamim reaffirmed Qatar’s principled support for Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial unity and independence, the statement said. He stressed the need to respect the United Nations Charter and the principle of inviolability of internationally recognised borders.
The call comes amid heightened regional diplomatic activity following Israel’s decision to recognise Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia, as an independent state — a move Mogadishu has strongly rejected as unlawful and destabilising.
Somalia has vowed to intensify diplomatic engagement with regional and international partners to protect what it says is its unity and internationally recognised territory.
